Pack 28 Boy Scout Participates in Historic Gathering of Civil War Veterans

In 1938 the 75th reunion of Civil War soldiers was held on the battlefield at Gettysburg.  Approximately 1800 Civil War Union and Confederate veterans attended including 25 veterans of the Battle of Gettysburg.  The State of Pennsylvania invited two Boy Scouts from each county to serve as aides at the big event, and one of those selected was a member of Scout Troop 28.  Ray Haugh was 16 years old when chosen and was a life-long member of St. Paul’s.  He spent two weeks in Gettysburg as a participant in the Diamond Jubilee helping with preparations and aiding the veterans.  The highlight of the celebration was a visit by President Franklin Roosevelt.  This was the last time that Civil War veterans officially gathered at Gettysburg to commemorate the famous battle.

In July of 2007 Ray’s Sunday School teacher, David Ehrhart, video taped Ray telling his story about the 75th reunion of Civil War soldiers at Gettysburg.  The video found below is Ray’s retelling of his experience as a Boy Scout as an attendee at the Diamond Jubilee in 1938.  Ray died in 2012 at the age of 90.  He was always proud of his scouting experiences especially this one.
